Jobs come and go. You only have one life. It's time to make the most of it, build wealth beyond the 9-to-5 + leave your mark on this world. Let's get to work! 🔥

I'm julie!

oh hey!

Here’s a fun fact no one tells you when you start fantasizing about “breaking free” from your 9-5:

You don’t start by quitting your job.

You start by getting uncomfortably clear about why you feel stuck in the first place.

Because “I want more freedom” is cute but it won’t pay your bills when your boss takes your badge, your benefits and your biweekly security blanket… and walks out the metaphorical door.

So if you’re wondering what the actual first step is toward diversifying your income and becoming less reliant on one employer to fund your entire life — pull up a chair. I brought receipts and a reality check.

Step 1: Stop Confusing Income With Security

Your paycheck isn’t a moat. It’s a single drawbridge. All it takes is one company restructure, one reorg, one new VP with a God complex — and poof, your so-called stability is gone.

So the very first thing to do? Shift your definition of “security.”

Security isn’t one fat paycheck. It’s:

  • Having multiple income streams
  • Building a cash buffer
  • Creating a monetizable skill stack
  • Taking back control of your calendar (at least a little)

Ask yourself:

  • If my job disappeared tomorrow, how long could I float?
  • Where does 100% of my income come from?
  • Is my lifestyle built on the assumption this paycheck will always be there?

If the answer to that last one is yes — you’ve got a dependency, not a plan.

Step 2: Take Inventory of What You Already Have

Everyone’s hunting for “the right side hustle” when they haven’t even taken stock of their current assets.

No, not your 401k. I mean:

  • The skills you’re paid for now
  • The skills you use so naturally you forget they’re valuable
  • Hobbies you’d pursue anyway (that someone would pay you for)
  • Time you could reclaim from Netflix, social scrolls or soul-sucking meetings

Make a list. You’ll start seeing patterns. You’ll also stop Googling “best side hustle in 2025” at 2 a.m.

Step 3: Build a Bridge — Not an Escape Hatch

This is where most people get it twisted.

They think: “I need to quit ASAP and go all-in on a business.”

Nope. You need a bridge. A logical, low-risk plan you can build while you’re earning.

That might mean:

  • Freelancing 5 hours a week
  • Selling unused home goods to fund your freedom fund
  • Testing a digital product idea
  • Learning how to resell Anthropologie finds on Poshmark (ask me how I know)

You don’t need to go viral. You need to prove to yourself that income is not limited to a paycheck.

Confidence from small wins builds fast.

Step 4: Audit What’s Really Keeping You Stuck

You probably already know what you could try.

You’re stuck because:

  • You’re waiting for the perfect idea
  • You’re afraid of failing publicly
  • You’re overwhelmed by options
  • You’re unsure where to start
  • You think you’re “not business-y enough”

Nobody starts out knowing how to diversify income. Everyone is awkward at first. And no one is watching you that closely (they’re too busy worrying about their own paycheck).

So… What’s the First Step?

Decide that relying on one paycheck is the riskiest move you can make — and take one small action that challenges that status quo.

It doesn’t have to be bold. It just has to be real.

This week, try one of these:

  • List your first item for sale
  • Pitch a freelance gig
  • Start an email list (even if it’s just your mom)
  • Open a “Freedom Fund” high-yield savings account
  • Take a mini course in something you’d actually enjoy monetizing

The scariest thing you can do? Nothing at all.
